Album review

RJD2's much talked about and praised new album, "The Third Hand" is now available in the same sequence as an all instrumental album. Underground hip-hop super-producer to some, virtuoso sample-based instrumental wizard to others, RJD2 embodies all these things on this release, but placates none who seek more of the same. The result is a cohesive pop album in the most classic sense, a sound more akin to Phoenix than Prefuse 73. In essence, this is RJD2's entrance into the continuum of enigmatic songwriter/producers (Jon Brion, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder) capable of creating a record full of rich songwriting, complex arrangements, and clever production that transcends genre.

RJD2 is Ramble John Krohn, a hip-hop producer. RJD2 was born in Eugene, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Until recently, he was part of the Definitive Jux label and produced tracks for many of its artists, as well as having a solo career.
