Album review

Argentine singer-songwriter Diego Torres showcases the artistry of his songs in this 17-track set recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 4, 2003. Although he is known for his nueva trova balladry, Torres is equally comfortable in these pop/rock tunes, his emotive vocals bringing to mind a cross between Alejandro Sanz and Gino Vannelli. His songs combine acoustic guitar, vivid poetry, and congas of nueva trova all wrapped with a smooth pop flourish. On "Tal Vez," a reflective song on the value of endless hope, Torres accompanies himself on piano, tinkling out leads against a string quartet. He teams up with Mexican rocker Julieta Venegas for the driving tropical tune "Suenos." Singer Vicentico, former frontman of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, duets on the crisp and upbeat "Usted." Another highlight is "Color Esperanza," Torres' hit from his previous CD Un Mundo Diferente. Following in the same anthemic vein is "Cantar Hasta Morir." --Ramiro Burr
